2009 Theatre Awards

 

All three major theatre awards for 2009 have been announced, and they show remarkable agreement. Here are the winners in the major categories:


The Olivier Awards for 2009 are

Best New Play: THE MOUNTAINTOP

Best Actor: MARK RYLANCE in Jerusalem

Best Actress: RACHEL WEISZ in A Streetcar Named Desire

Best Director: RUPERT GOOLD for Enron

Best Revival: CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF

Best Comedy: THE PRIORY

Best New Musical: SPRING AWAKENING

Best Musical Revival: HELLO DOLLY


The Critics' Circle Awards for 2009 are

Best Play: JERUSALEM

Best Actor: MARK RYLANCE in Jerusalem

Best Actress: RACHEL WEISZ in A Streetcar Named Desire

Best Director: RUPERT GOOLD for Enron

Best Musical: SPRING AWAKENING

Best Shakespearean Performance: JUDE LAW in Hamlet

Most Promising Playwright: ALIA BANO for Shades

Most Promising Newcomer: TOM STURRIDGE in Punk Rock

 

The Evening Standard Awards for 2009 are

Best Play: JERUSALEM

Best Actor: MARK RYLANCE in Jerusalem

Best Actress: RACHEL WEISZ in A Streetcar Named Desire

Best Director: RUPERT GOOLD for Enron

Best Musical: HELLO DOLLY

Most Promising Playwright: ALIA BANO for Shades

Outstanding Newcomer: LENNY HENRY in Othello

Special Award: SIR IAN MCKELLEN


And London transfers did nicely at Broadway's  2010 Tony Awards:

Best Play: Red

Best Musical Revival: La Cage Aux Folles

Best Actor in a Musical: Douglas Hodge in La Cage

Best Actress in a Musical: Catherine Zeta-Jones in  A Little Night Music

Best Director of a Play: Michael Grandage for Red

Best Director of a Musical: Terry Johnson for La Cage

Best Featured Actor in a Play: Eddie Redmayne in Red

Best Scenic Design, Lighting Design, Sound Design: Red

Lifetime Achievement Award: Sir Alan Ayckbourn
